Local Hero

Roger Saves Heart Attack Victim

Chairman of Willow Wood CC, Roger Eastland, has proved himself a real ‘local’ hero.  Roger, above with the Regional Manager of Edinburgh’s Cameron Toll Shopping Centre having just been presented with an award in recognition of his quick action in saving the life of an elderly man in the shopping centre where Roger is a security manger.  Roger takes up the story.  “It was Monday 5 May this year, about 4pm.  I was in charge of the centre control room when I received a call from one of our centre cleaners that an elderly man was on a seat in the mall and he thought he was having a heart attack. As I was the duty first aider a colleague and myself went to assist him. When we got to the man he was not breathing so we laid him on the floor an I started CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation ) but after what seem ages but was only 2-3 minutes he was still not breathing so I called for a defibrillator to try to shock his heart back into action. I connected the pads to his chest and gave him a first  shock but this did not work and we had to shock him again for a few seconds.  Happily he began to breathe again on his own (and so did my colleague and I) just as the paramedics arrived. The Paramedics checked him over prior to taking him to hospital and said that undoubtedly w e had just saved a life”. Happily the patient is now recovering in hospital.

Roger is very coy about his life-saving activities and says that he was just doing his job. That’s the sign of a real hero!
